Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO): Job description
Band 15, £39,002 to 41,846 pro rata for part-time hours.
Part-time and full-time applications welcome
Location: Scarborough up to 37 hours and Selby up to 18.5 hours, negotiable.
Are you looking for a challenging and exciting role in a dedicated team? Do you have a passion for ensuring that children and young people receive the best care and support possible? As an IRO in North Yorkshire you will have a key role in ensuring the safety and welfare of children and young people.
After a successful period of recruitment, our Independent Reviewing Service is pleased to offer remaining opportunities in both our Selby and Scarborough bases. This is a great opportunity to become part of a well-established, highly skilled team, who are determined to achieve the highest standards of care and safety for children and young people.
While the base of these positions is negotiable to some extent between our Selby and Scarborough offices, the successful candidates will be required to work in the Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale areas for a significant proportion of their working week. As a council we are lucky to benefit from access to modern technology enabling staff to work from multiple locations, including working from home. We very much promote flexible working, providing it meets our service needs.
As an NYCC employee, you will have access to our range of benefits. These include retail discounts, salary sacrifice schemes (including childcare vouchers), generous annual leave entitlements and flexible working hours. North Yorkshire as a county also benefits from excellent road and rail links, with easy access to bordering regions such as Yorkshire & Humber, Lincolnshire and East Riding, all of which are easily commutable to our great county – several of our Scarborough team travel from surrounding towns and cities including York, Beverley and Whitby.
We can also offer a comprehensive relocation scheme that aims to support those relocating to join our service. More details surrounding this can be found on our ‘relocation package’ document.
Both our Scarborough and Selby teams are well known for their friendly and supportive culture. The majority of employees have been part of the service for several years and continue to thrive in their roles. One of our current IRO’s has explained their love for their position in the following words:
“The great thing about being an IRO in North Yorkshire is that I can still use my skills gained as a manager but work directly with children and young people and their families which is why I came into the profession in the first place – perfect!”
IROs are expected to deliver on all aspects of the Independent Reviewing Officer guidance, chairing reviews for looked after children and young people, chairing Child Protection Conferences and also annual reviews for Foster Carers. You will have a crucial quality assurance role and will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to improving outcomes for children and young people and promote high standards of care to those who are looked after by the Local Authority.
You must have a Diploma in Social Work (or equivalent) and be registered with the HCPC. Previous management experience or supervisory experience of qualified staff is also very important, though consideration will be given to candidates who can demonstrate that they have management or supervisory skills developed through substantial experience in other senior posts. We are looking for someone with a good understanding of planning for children and excellent communication skills with children, families and professionals. You should have post-qualifying experience of children and family social work including substantial experience in child protection and planning for looked after children. Experience in chairing complex meetings and a good working knowledge of child care legislation is also required.
